Statistics Related to Sexual Abuse:
Risk Factors Not surprisingly, girls are at higher risk than boys. Preadolescents appear to be more at risk than either younger or older children. Girls with few friends in childhood report more abuse but this may the effect of the abuse and not a risk factor. The strongest and most consistent associations across the studies concerned the parents of the abused children. Girls who are victimized are more likely to have lived without their natural fathers, more likely to have mothers who are employed outside the home, more likely to have mothers who are disabled or ill, more likely to witness conflict between their parents and more likely to report a poor relationship with one of their parents. Girls who lived with stepfathers were also an increased risk of abuse. |
